Giving back to God
“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse.“(Malachi 3:10)
Ramblings from Evan’s dad – Evan is an incredible saver. Several years back Kris came up with a list of chores to do. Each one was $0.25 each, that’s right, one whole quarter. The list was optional, you only needed to do it if you wanted the money. Evan single handedly did ALL of them. Lacy and Connor would occasionally decide to do one, and see it was already checked off. They eventually outgrew it anyway because of babysitting opportunities. Evan, on the other hand , is still a capitalist at heart and is always open to making some money.
When the kids were smaller we had each of them a little bank divided up into 3 sections. One section was for tithes, one for savings, and one for spending. They have heard us discuss giving money for something at church or a ministry. We hope that as they grow up and become individuals, they too will give part of their income back to the Lord.
From time to time we will have our class over, or maybe go out with one of the couples for dinner. We explain to the kids what we are doing, that we feel strongly we are giving (tithing) our time to the Lord. They have embraced that idea as well, and if we need them to babysit the other family’s kids, they are great about doing it. They understand that they aren’t getting paid, that they are giving their time to God.
I think it is so important that we have and maintain that kind of mindset. It is easy to throw a few dollars in the collection plate , and check that off the list for the week. Just as there are opportunities for kids to help us during the week, there are opportunities for us to be used by God. We just have to make ourselves available.
Do I think we have to give back to God? No. Do I think we should? Absolutely!! That my friend, is a heart thing. And I pray today, my heart is looking for chances to be obedient…
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test Me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.“ (Malachi 3:10)
