“Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence.” (1 Corinthians 10:12 MSG)
Ramblings from Connor’s dad – Sin can be as sweet as sugar!…or so we think. Connor and I bought 2 dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts the other day. We had to! The HOT doughnut sign was on. We both indulged in a hot one while driving home. The boxes were then hidden away in the laundry room. The next morning I went into the laundry room and the boxes were undisturbed. I put them out on the kitchen counter so they would be seen at breakfast time.
One of the kids came moaning into the bedroom an hour later, stating they probably ate too many doughnuts. They felt lousy for a while, until the sugar overdose subsided. It seems the very same thing happened the last time I brought home doughnuts. That certain child, helped himself to the doughnuts and turned green after consuming too many of those delightfully sweet circular wonders.
I am not tempted to overindulge with those temptations!…but fix a pan of cornbread, and you will see a man struggling to control himself. One who often has a hard time later that evening going to sleep, because his tummy is too full.
Some of us will always be tempted with the “doughnuts” in life. Others will hold our nose up with pride as we walk by the HOT doughnut sign…only to succumb to the “hot pan of cornbread” placed in front of us.
It’s important to spend time in God’s word everyday drawing wisdom from His Word. It’s equally important to spend time in prayer, laying our request out, asking for wisdom and strength, and not running off, but listening to what the Holy Spirit might whisper to us. But we can’t then go on with our day pretending we are Superman, and looking for the “HOT” sign, only to walk by and get a whiff, because we are strong enough to resist!
The “HOT” sign might not be food. It might be the one serving it, where we like to eat breakfast because we get the tingles…or maybe its the convenience store where no one knows us, or maybe its the website we only go to at work.
We need to know where the “HOT” signs are, and detour two blocks around them, avoiding them like the plague. Some of us need to change convenience stores. Some of us need to find a new restaurant or coffee shop to frequent. Some of us need to put our computers in a more public place.
If we are honest with ourselves, most of us outgrew our Superman underwear a long time ago…
One who is wise is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool is reckless and careless. (Proverbs 14:16)
