Cultivate An Open Mind
“Get rid of all filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the message God has planted in your hearts, for it is strong enough to save your soul.” (James 1:21 NLT)
Ramblings from Evan’s dad – The other day Kris heard the faintest noise in our bedroom. We tried to figure out where it was coming from, but couldn’t. So we turned off the TV in the bedroom. We could hear it a little better, but still not enough. I then turned off the TV in the bathroom. Now we definitely could hear it better, but still could not tell where it was coming from. Finally, I turned off our fan for the a/c. In the stillness of the room, we were able to hear it distinctly, and tell what it was and where it was coming from. I was taken back at how quiet it became when we turned everything off.
At the moment I am sitting in a hospital room watching my best friend hurt. She’s finally dozed off after being here now for 13 hours having tests run. I turned the TV off, and sit hear watching her rest. It is easy to hear things going on around me. People walking up and down the hospital corridor. Conversations going on in the next room. It’s amazing what you can hear…when you sit still, be quiet…and listen.
How much stuff do we have “on” in our life that is distracting us from God? Some of it might even be good stuff. Some of it probably is not so good. But all of it with no moderation, can keep us from what or more importantly,WHO, is best…
Therefore, ridding yourselves of all moral filth and evil, humbly receive the implanted word, which is able to save you. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (James 1:21-22)
