Do The Things Other’s Won’t
“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can.” – John Wesley
Ramblings from Kris’ husband – Several years ago we stopped at the grocery store after church. I went up to the check out and stood behind a lady who by her dress apparently had just left church, too. She was wearing the impeccable church lady dress, with appropriate accessories.
She surprised me when she quickly berated the poor cashier over some frivolous problem concerning the cantaloupes. I stood there embarrassed as this “church lady” verbally abused the poor young lady working there. After several minutes of this, she finally threw her money down and stormed out over the 32 cent discrepancy!
As she left, the cashier almost broke down and cried. She was trembling from the unmerited verbal abuse she had just received.
I paused for a minute faking great interest in the spearmint gum, to let the dust clear before I stepped forward. I saw the still shell shocked cashier quickly figure out I had on church clothes, too. It was apparent with her that I was guilty by association! I quickly smiled as BIG a smile as I could muster, and informed her that I did NOT go to the same church as the lady who had just stormed off. Thankfully that got a faint grin from her.
John Wesley’s motto was “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can.” Unfortunately, that lady had not adopted that in her life. In fact she seemed to take it and replace GOOD with HARM. I know if I were looking for a church, I would NOT want to visit her’s!
Think living like John Wesley described would have an impact on our community if all of us Christians starting living that way consistently??…as my beautiful wife likes to say, people don’t care how much you know…until they know how much you care!!
I hope everywhere you go today there will be Jesus sightings!….
